Vasectomy The Open-Ended Technique

The Vasectomy procedure is gaining widespread popularity throughout the world, and in Australia about 29,000 men have a vasectomy each year. With increased education and information, the open - ended vasectomy is now something that is talked about amongst men who want to make choices about contraception.  It is a straight forward, safe and effective method of birth control and can relieve the risks associated with the female oral contraceptive pill.

At Metrocentre, we offer a same day consultation and vasectomy procedure – we find that most men who have been considering a vasectomy prefer to attend Metrocentre once for both the consultation and then follow with the procedure. The duration of the appointment is approximately one and a half hours and usually our patients are able to drive home afterwards. Generally, most men recover well and are back to work within a few days.

At Metrocentre, we perform the vasectomy procedure in our dedicated theatre, with no requirement for overnight hospitalisation. The same day consult and vasectomy procedure is offered in both our Brisbane and Gold Coast rooms.

There are several different techniques used to perform vasectomies and it is important to consider the differences in the techniques. At Metrocentre, the open-ended technique (Dr Lekich has trained extensively under Dr Bruce Errey who has performed 30,000 open ended vasectomies) is used for several reasons.
The open-ended approach appears to

1. reduce postoperative pain
2. prevents the build up of sperm and the effects of  this over time
3. offer greater chances of a successful micro - surgical vasectomy reversal if that need arises in the future.

Micro-Surgical Vasectomy Reversal – The Owen Technique

At Metrocentre, we offer micro – surgical vasectomy reversal procedures because we understand that changes in life directions are unpredictable. The micro – surgical reversal procedure has been pioneered, perfected and successfully micro - surgically performed since 1971 by Prof Owen and often in conjunction with Dr Chris Lekich and his team located in his dedicated and specifically designed practice in Brisbane. 

Micro – surgical vasectomy reversals are a good option for men (who have previously had a vasectomy) and their partners who would like to start a family, with IVF being generally the other option considered. The micro – surgical reversal procedure takes around two and a half hours with both a local anaesthetic and light sedation administered by a specialist anaesthetist. Post operatively, men are pain free and comfortable with minimal down time, and can resume work reasonably soon afterwards.

The success of our micro – surgical vasectomy reversal procedures is dependant on several factors:

1. The interval between the vasectomy and the reversal can affect results. In general, the sooner the reversal, the better the result.
2. The technique used for the original vasectomy.
3. Microsurgical precision and experience as well as the equipment and skill of a practised and expert team.

The Owen technique used by Dr Lekich during micro – surgical vasectomy reversals appears to offer a:

1. Tighter anastomosis (re – joining) of the vas tube which enables the successful passage of sperm.
2. Unique three layered approach to help protect the vas join utilizing a strong focus on microsurgical detail.
3. At Metrocentre, consultations are usually held separately to micro – surgical reversal procedures, however for our “out-of- towners”, interstate and overseas clients, formal consultations are usually held the day prior.
