Vasectomy Procedures vs. Tubal Ligation (Tubes tied)

What is the right choice for you and your partner?

As a couple, selecting the most appropriate birth control method can be a lengthy and confusing process. If you and your partner have already had children, or are not interested in ever having a child, then you may wish to consider the more permanent forms of birth control- a vasectomy or tubal ligation.

What is a vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a permanent form of male contraception which involves a minimally invasive procedure to cut the vas deferens to prevent the fertile sperm mixing with semen during ejaculation. At the Metrocentre located in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Melbourne and Sydney, our highly experienced micro-surgeons conduct precise and incredibly successful open-ended vasectomies on a regular basis.

This procedure does not require general anaesthetic or any extended hospital visits and can be conducted in the privacy and comfort of our private clinic. Many men are able to return to their normal activities after a few days’ rest.

What is tubal ligation (tubes tied)?

Tubal ligation is a permanent form of contraception for women and involves cutting and sealing the fallopian tubes that transport the egg to the uterus. This procedure is far more invasive than a vasectomy and as such requires hospitalisation, general anaesthetic and a longer more complicated surgery.

There are many potential serious risks associated with this type of surgery:

  • Perforation of the intestine
  • Infection
  • Complications with anaesthetic
  • Pulmonary embolism

Which procedure is more beneficial?

As a couple, selecting a permanent form of contraception is a personal decision that should be made together and discussed with your GP, fertility control clinic or your gynaecologist. That said, a precisely executed vasectomy presents a range of benefits over a tubal ligation procedure as it:

  • Is far less expensive
  • Encourages a far more rapid recovery
  • Is much less invasive
  • Has less potential side effects

At the Metrocentre our highly experienced team is more than happy to answer any of your queries or concerns in relation to this procedure.

To discover more about the open-ended vasectomy and Owen Three-Layer vasectomy reversal procedures we offer at Metrocentre, or to arrange a consultation at one of our centres in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sydney or Melbourne, please contact us.
